Why orange?
It started with one shiny orange shirt.
In 1973, a six-year-old girl named Phyllis Webstad (Northern Secwépemc, Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation) got ready for her first day of school. Her granny bought her a brand-new orange shirt for the occasion — shiny, bright, and hers.
When Phyllis arrived at St. Joseph Mission residential school, they took her clothes away — including her new orange shirt. She never got it back.
"The color orange has always reminded me of that," she later said — of how it felt to be little and have everything that made you you taken away, and to feel like no one cared.

In 2013, at a commemoration event in Williams Lake, British Columbia, Phyllis shared her story publicly — and Orange Shirt Day was born. Every September 30, people across Turtle Island wear orange to say what should never have needed saying: every child matters.
The history we wear it for
This is not ancient history.
For over a century, the U.S. and Canadian governments removed Native children from their families and sent them to boarding and residential schools built to strip away their languages, cultures, and identities. Many children never came home.

In 2021, Canada made September 30 a federal statutory holiday: the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In 2024, the United States issued a formal presidential apology for the federal Indian boarding school era. Remembering is how healing starts — and orange is how we remember out loud.
What the day means
Three words. One promise.
Every Child Matters honors the survivors who carried this history home, the families and communities forever changed by it, and the children who never made it back. It is a memorial, a celebration of resilience, and a promise to the kids growing up right now — that they get to be exactly who they are.
When a whole school, a whole town, a whole feed turns orange on September 30, it tells survivors: we see you, we believe you, we remember.
